Some people choose to wrap themselves up warm and stay inside during the festive season. Unfortunately, that means that those people will miss out on one of the best experiences that the holidays have to offer – the Christmas Markets!
In this article, the Oyster Loan team guide you through (what we think are) the best Christmas markets in the UK for 2019.
10 – Oxford
Kicking-off our list is the home of the oldest university in the United Kingdom, Oxford. The Oxford markets are a gold mine for all things cultural.
Here, you will find food stands selling food and warm drinks. But what sets Oxford apart is the host of local live entertainment that they have on offer. There are many singers there who range from contemporary work all the way to traditional Christmas carols that we can all sing along to.
9 – Birmingham
Situated outside the Museum & Art Gallery are the Birmingham Christmas markets. They’re the largest German Christmas markets outside of mainland Europe.
That means that you can expect to see Bavarian beers, pretzels, handmade gifts, and glühwein (a specific kind of mulled wine). Sehr gut!
8 – Glasgow
For family-friendly fairground rides, hot drinks, and a variety of street food, Glasgow Christmas markets are the place to be.
The Glasgow Christmas markets are typically set in George Square and St. Enoch Square. They’re both filled with beautiful architecture and they provide the perfect backdrop for an idyllic Christmas market trip.
7 – Newcastle
Newcastle makes the list because of a recent change that has been made to the way that their market is structured. Usually, there are two Christmas markets in Newcastle – the International Christmas market and the Christmas market for local traders.
This year, they are merging together. This means you can find Yorkshire pudding wraps and bratwurst within 10 steps of one another.
6 – Cardiff
If you’re planning on doing your present shopping at a Christmas market, then Cardiff is the city for you. The Welsh capital specialises in a whole host of handmade gifts and products for you to browse.
If you live far away from Cardiff and you’re worried about the cost of travel, consider taking out a Christmas loan. They’re short-term loans designed to help people through the festive season more comfortably. Christmas loans for bad credit are also available. Read on to find out more.
5 – Bath
The Bath Christmas markets have won awards for their festive performances and over 200 traditional stalls.
At these stalls, you can find hand made goods including soaps, woodwork, jewellery, clothing and blankets. Not to mention that the whole market is surrounded by Bath Abbey and the famous Roman Baths themselves.
As for the performances, you can expect to see singing, dancing, and even some comedic performances that make for a fun day out for the whole family.
4 – London (Southbank)
Right beneath the London Eye, on the banks of the river Thames, the Southbank Christmas markets are the best that the capital has to offer.
With an emphasis on artisan gifts and homemade produce, these markets have a surprisingly personal touch to them for such a large city.
The views from these markets cannot be beaten in terms of the amount of iconic scenery. From the markets, you can see Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, the Tower Bridge, and the Thames. All of that, combined with the festive decorations make for a breath-taking view.
3 – Cirencester
For a more out of the way Christmas market, Cirencester has an amazing Christmas market. The Cotswolds provide the peace and serenity of country life while also having an array of goods to buy at the market.
Overlooked by the town’s enormous Christmas tree, these Christmas markets are heavily influenced by the farmers’ market culture of the area. This means that the food and drinks you can buy are all made from the best fresh ingredients in the area.
2 – Leeds
The Leeds Castle Christmas markets bring the festive season to life – literally. With opportunities to meet actual reindeer along with a selection of birds of prey, Leeds Castle is a majestic way to spend the holidays.
Also, the market is situated on the lawn of the historic castle. This means that there is plenty of space along with an awe-inspiring backdrop for these markets.
1 – Edinburgh
Set in the heart of one of the nation’s most festive cities, the Edinburgh Christmas markets are well worth a visit, no matter where you are in the country.
The markets are directly across from Waverly train station for easy access and the sheer size of the market is remarkable. There are multiple levels to the market ranging from the upper layers of clothing and handmade goods stalls next to Princes’ Street all the way down to the fairground rides in the centre.
Throughout the markets, you can expect to find a variety of delicious treats. There are countless sweet stalls and more chocolate fountains than in a Roald Dahl book.
